How to Choose aHair Colorist in Raleigh.

A field guide to choosing a hair colorist in Raleigh, NC - from a master who has spent twenty-six years in the chair. The questions worth asking.

Choosing a colorist is a small commission. You are hiring an artist to interpret a part of you that is photographed, mirrored, and looked at every day for the rest of your life. It is worth taking slowly. Here are the questions worth asking.

1. What is their specialty?

A colorist who does everything well is rare. Most great colorists have a discipline. Ask: do they specialize in blonde, in brunette, in correction, in editorial? Match their specialty to your need.

2. How long is their consultation?

A rushed consultation is a warning. Good colour begins with a conversation about your hair's history, the products you use, the colours you've worn, and the way you live in your hair day to day. Fifteen minutes is not enough.

3. Can they show you their own work?

Not curated stock photos. Their portfolio, of their clients, in natural light. A confident colorist will have one and will be delighted to show it.

4. How do they talk about hair health?

This is the most important question. If lift, lift, lift is the answer, walk away. The best colorists in Raleigh - Samina among them - will tell you what your hair can hold before they tell you what colour it can become. Integrity of the strand is non- negotiable.

5. Is there a price list, or a consultation?

Master colorists, almost universally, do not publish a flat price list. The reason is honest: the work is bespoke. A consultation comes first; the investment is shared once the work is understood. A flat list often signals a production-line salon.
